This year our family is focusing on Advent. Resisting the commercialism of Christmas is so hard, but we are purposing as a family to focus on our faith and family, generosity and giving of our time.
I am trying this new book Come Let Us Adore Him by Paul David Tripp. You have heard me talk about his devotional New Morning Mercies quite a few times as it is a favorite. I wanted to give this a try as it has great reviews and a section where Tripp gives you a connecting concept to talk about with your kids!

I’ll be reading this myself and we will tie the concepts into weekly family times on Sunday as we light the candles of the Advent wreath. (I adore this Celtic one!) You can read more about what each weekly candle represents below. It really is such a beautiful tradition rich in history and beauty as you anticipate the celebration of Christ’s birth.

Set on the branches of the Advent wreath are four candles: three purple candles and one pink candle. A more modern tradition is to place a white candle in the center of the wreath. As a whole, these candles represent the coming of the light of Christ into the world.
Each week of Advent on Sunday, a particular Advent candle is lit. Catholic tradition states that the four candles, representing the four weeks of Advent, each stand for one thousand years, to total the 4,000 years from the time of Adam and Eve until the birth of the Savior. The four candles Prophecy, Bethlehem, Shepherd’s, Angel’s and Christ’s candle all have especially meaning and coordinating Scriptures.

Some years we have filled these pockets with community events, fun activities, and family adventures. (This year we are pressing pause on this particular advent tradition in order to slow about pace some.)
For or two years now I have been reading from the Jesus Storybook Bible to my kids following this plan and using the cards I printed online. Last year I created these felt ornaments to go with each day’s story and boy do the kids love that the card, book, and ornament coordinate!

Advent officially begins on Sunday, December 3; but most Devotionals will begin on December 1 to complete the twenty-four days leading up to Christmas.
