Creating White Space // Day 18

Sometimes the thing that helps us feel the best, or at least a little bit more clearheaded, is just to clean out and reorganize. I cleaned out my spice drawer and used a chalkboard pen, instead of traditional chalk to label them. All alphabetized and ready to go. Feels a lot better!

It seems silly, but I think it’s very true. Especially as I go into a cooking and baking season it feels really good to have these two areas of my home organized. The other “spice/baking/cooking cabinet” got an overhaul too. Savory/cooking on the bottom, baking on the middle shelf, and oversized on the top. It’s the only cupboard in my kitchen that houses food – the other 3 cabinets (yes I only have four) house cooking supplies and dishes. One good thing about a small kitchen… you keep what you use, because you only have room for what you use.

Of course finding six packages of sloppy Joe mix was right quite humorous as well.

There are some easy, practical ways to simplify life. One of which is to get rid of the things we don’t use. This is not the greatest strength of mine. But I am learning! Especially as I go through things, get rid of them by give them away, and find myself refreshed because our space is organized, beautiful, comfortable, and usable. I am also getting creative with reusing, repurposing, and recreating. This might be my favorite party of this series so far. It taps into my creative side, which I love.
Those four words (organized, beautiful, comfortable, and usable) are the words I find myself clinging to as I make decisions about what to keep and what to give away.
Much like I use three words to guide my party planning, I am using those four words to guide my decoration and organization of our home. Do you have words that you use to help make decisions like these?

One final thing.
I also picked up a book on tape about the Amish and their simple lifestyles, I referenced it in Day 17.  It’s called “Money Secrets of the Amish: Finding True Abundance in Simplicity, Sharing, and Saving.” I’m just a short ways in, but already I’m struck with the themes that are consistent with some of the things I have been learning through this 31 day challenge. I will share more as I get a bit further in.

But be sure that everything is done properly and in order.
