Creating White Space // Day 23

Retrain your brain.

It’s a thing I’ve heard spouted off a lot in my family. I am blessed to be a part of  family that is very conscious of the unconscious. They are learned and experienced people who value mind, body, & spirit and believe in taking care of yourself as a whole person.
“Retrain your brain.” I’ve heard my aunt say that a million times. I believe I have even done it. There are things I used to do, parts of who I was, that I have consciously chosen to change. I have retrained my brain.
And I find myself wanting to do it again.
In the book “Money Secrets of the Amish: Finding True Abundance in Simplicity, Sharing, and Saving” the author Lorilee Craker talks about self discipline. She references a man who made a practice to deny himself something each and every day. She explores the power of this notion and I too found myself thinking on it a lot. What does it mean to go without so others don’t have to. Or to choose to deny yourself something because you have a greater goal or cause in mind.
I want to be a person of self-discipline.
I want to:
Listen more.
Give more.
Do more.
Stop and rest more.
Hear and remember more.
I believe these things are valuable and attainable – I think it requires balance and self-discipline.

I think I will need to re-train my brain.

Hebrews 12:11
“For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.”
