As part of my creating whitespace series I have been trying to carve out time in the morning to read an inspirational book or the Bible. My Bible study devotional which is “Hearing from God Each Morning: 365 Daily Devotionals” by Joyce Meyer has had me reading in 1 Corinthians 12 this week it took each verse and divided it day to day.
She has spent time focusing on each of the individual gifts that people can be given by the Holy Spirit. For me that was interesting, but as I read the entire chapter I was more struck with the overall idea that we all having different abilities and when you put them together we create the whole body. This is not a new chapter, or concept, for me; but for some reason it has struck a new cord.
We can’t all be good at everything, and at times certain gifts are given to us to bless ourselves or others. We need others in our lives. I also was struck with the idea that some of the “less desirable” gifts are the ones that are treasured by God the most. They’re the ones that are to be taken care of. They are the parts of the body that are clothed and unseen.
And I think more than anything as I’m reading the chapter I am amazed at how something I’ve read many times is new to me again this week. One of the most amazing things about the Bible is that God uses it to speak to us where we are today. But, beyond that it also demonstrates that I am ever changing and growing and that re-reading something can be a powerful tool. Looking at something again or re-examining something in a new light is important. Reflection is important.
I think today more than ever I appreciate others’ gifts, and what a gift they can be to me and my family. I appreciate that I am changing and my gifts change with me. I am thankful for Holy Spirit that works in us. And gives us tools to bless others.
