At the start of the new year my husband googled “how to become a voracious reader.” A self proclaimed “non–reader” he wanted to develop a new habit in the new year.
Let me tell you this… in the 8 (or 9) years we’ve been together I’ve never seen him read a book cover to cover and in just a few weeks he had read 4 or 5. I would say it worked. 🙂 (See the end of the post for those tips my husband found).
He inspired me and this summer I have committed to being a summer of reading. Also a double bonus since I had accidentally packed away several books I had received from the Bethany House Book Reviewers and I had recently discovered them again. I put them on the top of my summer pile and recently just finished “The Miner’s Lady” by Tracie Peterson.
It was a pleasant read. It is the third book in the series called “Land of Shining Water.” They are each novels however that can be read independently so this was nice since I just picked up with the third book. I received it as a complimentary copy from Bethany House publishers as a part of the Reviewers program, I highly suggest this program if you are an avid reader. I found the book both delightful and easy to read.
It takes place and Ely, Minnesota in 1890 and it centers around a feuding duo of Italian families. I particularly liked the historical parts of the story that revealed Italian traditions. Two daughters of an immigrant family explore love, faith, and finding their independence.
I have always enjoyed Peterson’s writing and found this one to be no exception. I will say though – it was very predictable. The book would have received a higher rating from me if there was some element of surprise in the storyline. Despite that fact I do love her relatable characters. You feel like you walk away from the story having made a friend, one you are sorry to see go with the last page turn.
I can’t wait to start the next one. Especially since one of the tips was to have your next book readily available.
Here are those tips:
1. Always keep your book with you.
2. Have your next book picked out before you finished the book you’re currently reading.
3. If it doesn’t grab your attention in the first chapter or to move onto the next book.
