Baby Dedication: Our Gifts From God

Our boys truly are a gift from the Lord. As I sit here, on a Friday night, preparing to celebrate Camper’s dedication with friends and family this weekend; I have been thinking about what baby dedication means to our family and why we have chosen to dedicate our boys as infants.

This verse from 1 Samuel chapter 1 verses 26-28 really captures my emotions…

“She said, “Oh, my lord! As your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman who stood here beside you, praying to the LORD. “For this boy I prayed, and the LORD has given me my petition which I asked of Him. “So I have also dedicated him to the LORD; as long as he lives he is dedicated to the LORD.” And he worshiped the LORD there.”

I prayed for our boys. I yearned to be their Mom. I daily feel blessed to be entrusted with them. I see my job as the greatest gift I’ve been given and, along with Ben, take the challenge seriously. We are passionate about raising kind, generous, christ-loving, others-centered boys – who will become kind, generous, christ-loving, others-centered men. We want to model love for them, and pray that in turn they will turn out as independent men who love Jesus, their family, and others with passion and generosity that is unparalleled by others around them.
Our job is to love, teach, train, and let go.
Dedication is our way of enlisting our village. I always say, “It takes a village.” And boy does it ever! We choose and make sacrifices in order to live where we do – all so we can do life with these people who we love and admire – our village. Our village loves our boys so very much and Cashel and Camper are so blessed to have so many people who give unselfishly to them, and so many wonderful models of people who are serving the Lord with their whole minds, bodies, and spirits.
A few more Scriptures that inspired us to dedicate our children to the Lord. We feel there is a charge in Scripture that is clear – train and raise up your children knowing His love – that is our hearts’ desire.
“Behold, children are a gift of the LORD, The fruit of the womb is a reward.” – Psalm 127:3
Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not depart from it. – Proverbs 22:6
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, So are the children of one’s youth. How blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them; They will not be ashamed When they speak with their enemies in the gate. – Psalm 127:4-5
The LORD bless you, and keep you; The LORD make His face shine on you, And be gracious to you; The LORD lift up His countenance on you, And give you peace.’ – Numbers 6:24-26
Our quiver is full – for the time being. 😉 Our job is clear.
On Sunday, May 11 2014 we will dedicate Camper to the Lord, as we did his brother Cashel in December of 2012. Asking for the Lord to bless, keep, and make His face to shine upon our boys.
Lord, give them your peace; your love; the fruit of your Spirit. Help them to come to know you fully, help us to guide them toward your overwhelming love and forgiveness.
For Camper: “Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good.Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other. Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically. Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying. When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality.” Romans 12:9-13
For Cashel: Psalm 22:10. “From the day I was born I have been in your care, and from the time of my birth you have been my God.”

  1. These boys have been such a warm and wonderful blessing to us, their grandparents! They are truly some of our most precious gifts in life! You and Ben have done an amazing job raising them so far! May you be blessed with wisdom from on high and love that abounds as you continue to help these little people grow into adulthood!
