On a Summer Tide: Review and Giveaway

This was such a fun Memorial Day weekend read, the book culminated on Memorial Day and I completed it just as our Memorial Day camping weekend came to a close.  It was the perfect companion on our weekend away. I devoured it and I am so glad there will be more to come. Suzanne Woods Fisher is a talented writer who crafts not only engaging and interesting characters, but also story lines that are both relateable and an escape from my own reality.

The three sisters portrayed in “On a Summer Tide” have characteristics I can see in myself and in my own sister relationships. However,  they also had enough differences from each other and from me leaving my interest peaked and me fully engaged in their conflicts, how they would or would not resolve them, and highly invested into them and their relationships.

The sisters face a great deal of loss, adventure, and self-discovery in this story and not only did I love the culmination of this book, but I am waiting with baited breath for the sequential books to release to hear more about their lives and where their decisions will take them. I loved the setting! As Fisher bounces us back and forth between “Three Sisters Island” and it’s quaint small town vibe, the past that brought them all here today, and the busy and chaotic lives the sisters all have lead leading up to their present day situation I easily jumped from character to character and found the story easy to follow yet complicated enough to leave me flipping pages without stopping. I really related to both the characters and the story and yet found it also completely refreshing and outside the norm of my usually reading.

The book was an easy read, and I’ve already shared it with a friend. I cannot wait for book two in this series and I hope you’ll read on to read more about the book, snag a recipe from Fisher, and join in the great giveaway included in the rest of this post.

Oh-So-Maine Blueberry Buckle

Summer in Maine means plump, tart blueberries are everywhere. Here’s a family recipe that is nearly fool-proof….and so delicious! Especially with a scoop or two with vanilla ice cream.

Ever wonder how it got the name Blueberry Buckle? While the batter rises as it bakes, but the blueberries and crumb topping weigh it down. This causes the surface of the cake to buckle…hence the name.

Batter:

¾ cup sugar

¼ cup soft butter

1 egg

½ cup milk

2 cups sifted flour

½ teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons baking powder

2 cups drained blueberries

Crumb Topping:

½ cup sugar

½ cup flour
½ teaspoon cinnamon

¼ cup softened butter

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Mix sugar and butter with egg. Stir in milk Sift together and stir in flour, baking powder and salt. Carefully blend in blueberries. Put on topping before baking. Pour in a greased and floured 9” square pan.
